The draft Global Charter for Social Protection Rights published on this new website is meant for global campaigning and launching a reflection on what kind of social protection we really want and need.
We are welcoming the already existing initiatives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ‘Social Protection Floor’ of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) but also think we might need more if we really want to respect and fulfil our economic and social human rights. Most of all, we want social protection to be transformative, by which we mean that by implementing it, we also fight inequality, protect the environment and start to change the economic system.
Our social protection then, is more and is better than a conditional cash transfer, a temporary measure to help poor children or labour law that only looks at growth and productivity. We dream of a social commons, a democratic and participatory system of social protection that cares for the sustainability of life.
We invite you to read our proposals, they are still drafts and are open to amendments, suggestions, improvements.
