Combattre la pauvreté infantile, promouvoir la santé et une éducation de qualité, garantir le droit du travail ainsi que tous les autres droits économiques et sociaux : tout cela n’est pas possible sans système complet de protection sociale. Il est évident que la pauvreté ou le chômage peuvent avoir des conséquences considérables sur la santé physique et psychique des individus. Bref, tous les droits économiques et sociaux sont liés entre eux.

Social Commons: Because social protection is ours

Social protection is high on the international agenda to-day. In 2012 the ILO (International Labour Organisation) adopted a recommendation on ‘social protection floors’. In 2015 the international community in the General Assembly of the UN (United Nations) adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a separate chapter on inequality, and explicit mention of social protection and several components of social protection in different points of the text.

Nevertheless, we should not be too optimistic about all people everywhere getting living wages, good health care, quality education, maternity protection, pensions, etc. Continue reading →

Financing Social Protection Floors through economic cycles

A side event on financing social protection floors (SPFs) was held on Monday 22 May, 2017, on the occasion of the Second Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on financing for development follow-up (FfD forum) which took place at the UN in New York from 22 to 25 May 2017. The event was entitled “Financing social protection floors throughout economic cycles”, and was organized jointly by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Germany), the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the United Nations, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Brot für die Welt and SocDevJustice on behalf of the Global Coalition for Social Protection Floors.
